Its 2017 and the Diwali Festival is here again to spread joy, happiness and light around the world.
Diwali is the called the Festival of Light and is celebrated to honour Rama-Chandra, the seventh avatar, as it is believed that on this day Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king – Ravana. People lit their houses to celebrate the victory over evil, light over darkness. The goddess of happiness and good fortune, Lakshmi, is also involved in the celebration as it’s believed that she enters houses that are pure, clean and bright!
As the festival symbolises the lifting of spiritual darkness, people display lamps, bonfires and fireworks to show the victory of light and the word “Deepawali” means a row or cluster of lights.
On the first day of the festival people pray, eat special breakfast consisting of many different foods, and the statue of Hindu goddess Lakshmi is on display and is carried throughout the streets. After dark there are fireworks and people who live near rivers float lighted lamps on mini rafts.
